#Plassey Credit Union Ltd. to date
1985 saw the formation of a Study Group as a result of prompting from V. Rev. Gerard O'Neill, the first Parish Priest in the then new parish of Our Lady Help of Christians. Being situated in the barony of Plassey we opted for the name Plassey Credit Union Ltd.

On February 18th 1985, the Study Group commenced saving. Our first lodgement was the princely sum of £93.60. At the 1986 Irish League of Credit Unions A.G.M. we were presented with our Certificate of Affiliation. From 1985 to 1995 we were a totally voluntary organisation operating from hostel premises of the Salesian Fathers in Milford, Castletroy, Limerick.

With little experience but a lot of foresight it was decided to investigate the possibility of securing our own premises. The sub-committee appointed to look into these possibilities came back to the Board of Directors with plans and specifications, but no site. Again the Salesian Fathers came to our aid and we purchased our present site from the Order. Building commenced immediately and on the 18th of November 1994 our members were able to transact their business for the first time in their own premises.

1995 had further landmarks in our progress, beginning with the official opening of the Office in March 1995 and the hiring of our first paid employee.  In 1995 the office was opened for 22 hours per week and this has increased progressively to its present 39 per week.

How Plassey Credit Union is Organised

Plassey Credit is owned and controlled by its members. It is run by a voluntary Board of Directors (9 members) and the Supervisory Committee (3 members).

Both of these groups are elected by the members at the Annual General Meeting which is usually held in November/December of each year.

The Board appoints other members to various voluntary committees in order to spread out the work.
